Facelift Series: Recovery
Recovery is a bridge that you must cross to discover a rejuvenated appearance with a facelift. Many of our patients dread the recovery process, worrying that it will be painful or take too long. Don’t let these fears stop you from learning more about facelift surgery. Recovery is a part of the process, but it doesn’t have to be a painful, miserable experience, and all patients say it wasn’t as bad as they had imagined. We’ll help you prepare for recovery so you can be as comfortable as possible throughout the process.
After a Facelift: What to Expect
We usually recommend that facelift patients spend one night with us at INSPIRE, our fully accredited AAAASF surgery center. The next day, you’ll be ready to head home to continue your recovery. You’ll need someone to help you the first few days. Most patients experience:
- Tightness
- Discomfort- Most patients do not experience significant pain, just mild discomfort.
- Mild bruising
- Swelling
How Long Will It Take to Fully Recover from a Facelift?
We like to think of the recovery process in two parts, surgical downtime and social downtime. You’ll need to take approximately one to two weeks off from work and regular activities. During this time, you’ll experience significant changes in how you feel, improving each day. Most patients can resume many activities within a week, provided they wear a hat and sunscreen outdoors. After two weeks, you’ll be able to resume many activities, but you won’t be ready for a big social event or pictures. Social downtime usually takes 6-8 weeks. Recovery after a facelift can be a slow process and cannot be rushed.
Tips for a Successful Facelift Recovery
We are here to help you throughout the facelift process, including recovery. Please get in touch if you have questions or concerns. After your surgery, we’ll provide detailed recovery instructions. Here are a few quick tips to help you prepare.
- Take Your Medication– The medications we prescribe are essential for a comfortable recovery after a facelift. Many are non-narcotic but work to stop pain before it starts by decreasing inflammation. These are essential for a quick recovery.
- Rest and Recover– Rest is important during recovery. While we don’t recommend staying in bed all day, we do recommend leaving plenty of time for rest and relaxation. Stock up on books and entertainment before your surgery.
- Stay Hydrated- Good hydration can help you heal after surgery. Drink plenty of water before and after your surgery.
- Stay in Touch– If you experience anything unexpected, let us know. Although some discomfort is normal, severe pain is not. We are happy to answer any questions you have and can help you find solutions to common concerns after surgery.
