Weak, prominent, small, or pointy—these are all types of chins that can disrupt facial balance and harmony. The projection and contour of the chin and jaw are defining features of a person’s facial profile for both men and women. Dissatisfaction with your chin may stem from genetics or the natural aging process. Fortunately, there are several options to create better proportions between the nose, lips, and chin, resulting in a more balanced and attractive appearance.

Excess fat along the jawline, or a “double chin,” can make the face appear chubby or give the illusion of being overweight. For this condition, submental liposuction is an ideal solution. However, if the concern is specifically about the chin’s size, shape, or projection, several treatments can address these issues effectively.

What Is a Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure to enhance chin size, shape, and projection, improving facial harmony and balance. This procedure can be achieved through surgical or non-surgical methods, depending on the patient’s needs and goals. Chin augmentation surgery involves implants to create a more prominent and defined chin structure, offering permanent results. Non-surgical options, like dermal fillers, provide a temporary yet effective way to reshape and contour the chin without surgery.

Chin augmentation is often performed to address a weak or recessed chin or asymmetry to attain a more proportionate facial profile. Whether performed alone or in combination with other procedures like rhinoplasty or neck liposuction, chin augmentation can help patients achieve a more confident and harmonious appearance.

Submental Liposuction

To remove excess fat under the chin and along the jawline. This minimally invasive procedure involves making small incisions through which a thin tube, or cannula, is inserted to gently extract unwanted fat, resulting in a more defined and contoured neck and jawline. Ideal for individuals with good skin elasticity, submental liposuction can dramatically enhance facial proportions and create a more youthful and sculpted appearance. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, with minimal downtime, making it a popular choice for those seeking a quick and effective solution for a chubby or sagging neckline.

Genioplasty

A genioplasty addresses excess projection or issues with chin height. If the chin is asymmetrical, extremely small or disproportionately large, the bone needs to be repositioned to create a proportionate chin projection and height necessary for facial harmony. By making a cut in the bone through an incision in the mouth, the jaw and chin can be moved up, down, backwards or forwards. The bone is then secured into its new position with plates and screws and allowed to heal like any other fracture. A liquid or soft diet is required for a week after surgery, and you can expect to be back at work after one week.

Chin Implants

Implants can add projection to the chin and enhance facial contours. A solid implant is placed over the bone through a small incision either inside the mouth or under the chin.
Surgery is performed as an outpatient and recovery time is usually one week.

Injectables

Fillers such as Voluma, Juvederm, Radiesse and Sculptra can be used to refine the chin and jawline. Off label injection of small amounts of filler in precise locations can control the shape and contour of the chin and jawline and can even camouflage the dreaded jowls. Results can last for one to two years depending on the type of product used. Fat grafting also works great in this application, and results can last several years.

Chin Augmentation Candidates

You may be a good candidate for chin augmentation if you:

  • Feel that your chin is too small, weak, or lacks definition in proportion to the rest of your face
  • Desire a more balanced and harmonious facial profile, particularly in relation to your nose and jawline
  • Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the procedure and its results
  • Are bothered by a “double chin” or excess fat under the chin, which may be addressed with complementary procedures like submental liposuction
  • Are seeking a permanent solution (chin implants) or a non-invasive, temporary option (dermal fillers) to enhance chin projection or contours
  • Have good skin elasticity, particularly if undergoing submental liposuction, to ensure optimal results and skin tightening
  • Want to improve your appearance after changes due to aging, such as a receding chin or loss of jawline definition
  • Are looking to complement other facial procedures, such as rhinoplasty or a neck lift, for a more comprehensive facial enhancement

If you meet any of these criteria, a schedule your consultation to explore your options and determine the best approach for your chin augmentation goals.

Frequently Asked Questions for Chin Augmentation in Austin

What are the differences between chin implants and fillers?

Chin implants are permanent and involve surgery, and dermal fillers are non-invasive, temporary, requiring periodic touch-ups. The choice depends on your goals and desired results.

Is recovery from chin augmentation painful?

Recovery from chin augmentation varies based on the method used. Surgical implants may require a week of downtime; however, dermal fillers involve minimal discomfort and virtually no downtime.

Can chin augmentation be combined with other procedures?

Yes, chin augmentation is often combined with other treatments, such as rhinoplasty or neck liposuction, to achieve a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

How long do chin fillers last?

Chin fillers typically last 12 to 18 months, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors like metabolism and lifestyle.

Will chin augmentation leave scars?

Surgical chin augmentation incisions are typically small and hidden under the chin or inside the mouth, resulting in minimal visible scarring.

Can chin augmentation improve a “double chin”?

While chin augmentation enhances the structure of the chin, addressing a double chin often requires submental liposuction or other fat-reduction procedures.

How can I determine which chin augmentation option is best for me?

Scheduling a consultation with a board-certified specialist is the best way to assess your goals and determine whether surgical implants, dermal fillers, or another option suits your needs.

Testimonials

Kelly

My name is Kelly and Dr. Ashley Gordon did my procedures.

I went to many other doctors, did extensive research, did a lot of consultations… I just never had that feeling that everything was a complete package. So I was researching on the internet and I went from the Houston market to the Austin market, and Restora came up. It did not matter if there was one review, or 120 reviews, it was always five stars.
