The Big Difference Small Breast Implants Can Have
It doesn’t take a big breast implant to dramatically change breast size and shape. Many of our breast augmentation patients worry that their breasts will look fake or overdone after breast surgery. They’ve seen women with supersize implants and don’t want to replicate the look. At Restora Austin Plastic Surgery Centre, we’re committed to helping you find the perfect fit for your breast implants, big or small. Come see us and discover the big difference that small implants can make.
The Purposes of a Breast Implant
When we talk about breast implants, one of the first things that patients think about is size. Breast implants are designed to make the breasts bigger. However, you may not realize that size isn’t the only purpose of a breast implant. Breast implants can provide many benefits including:
- Increase Size– The primary goal of a breast implant is to increase size. If you want bigger breasts, you need implants. Implants come in variety of sizes from small to very large.
- Enhance Shape- Do you hope for more cleavage or rounder breasts? In some cases, breast implants change and enhance the shape of the breasts. Implants are available in a variety of shapes, including round and anatomical. Breast implants can only work with your natural breast shape, but used properly they can enhance what you already have.
- Correct Asymmetry– Many women have asymmetrical breasts, or one breast that is larger/smaller than the other. Implants may be able to even out the discrepancies between the breasts, creating a more balanced, uniform breast appearance. Breast implants cannot correct all asymmetry.
- Increase Projection– Breast implants come in a variety of projections, even similarly sized implants. The projection determines how far the implant will extend off the chest wall.
Breast implants play a valuable role in changing your breast appearance, but they aren’t the one magic solution to every breast problem. Your anatomy will impact your final results. Implants may not be able to entirely change breast shape or move breast position on the chest wall. An implant alone may not be able to correct all issues with the breasts. Some women will need a breast lift, nipple surgery, or other breast procedures to achieve optimal results. A breast implant enhances the breasts, but your anatomy plays a critical role in determining your breast augmentation results.
What Size Breast Implants Are Right for Me?
Patients often come to us asking for a specific breast size, like 36C or 38B. The reality is, “the look” matters much more than size or the cc’s. Implant size is important as it will help to achieve your desired look. Choose an implant that is too small and you’ll be disappointed, too large and you may experience lower back pain and discomfort. We’ll work with you to find appropriately sized implants for your anatomy and goals. Focus on desired appearance, not on cup size.
It is helpful for patients to come into their breast augmentation consultation with a general idea of desired breast size. Look at friends and models to get an idea of your anticipated look. Bring in your wish pics. Our before and after gallery can be a valuable tool.
We’ll also have different size implants to try on or test-drive at your consultation, along with Vectra 3-D imaging, so you on the day of your surgery, you will feel confident about the implant you’ve chosen.
Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants- Is One Choice Better than the Other?
What type of implants are best for a natural look, saline or silicone? The answer isn’t so simple. It really depends. Some women will look great in both saline and silicone implants, while a particular implant type will have specific advantages to other women. Dr. Reid and Dr. Gordon regularly use both types of implants and can help you choose the best fit for your situation.
- Saline Breast Implants– Saline implants feature a silicone outer shell that is filled with a sterile saline solution after it is placed into the breast.
- Silicone Breast Implants– Silicone implants feature a silicone outer shell with a soft silicone gel filling. They feel very similar to natural breast tissue, even outside of the breast.
- Cohesive Silicone Breast Implants- Technically a type of silicone implant, cohesive gel implants are filled with a thicker, semi-solid silicone filling. These implants hold their shape better than other implant types and are less likely to leak or rupture. They are also called “gummy bear implants” because their consistency is similar to that of gummy bear candies.
